The Frankford Library stands as a “City on a Hill”, a vital community hub supporting education, connection, and access to resources for the surrounding neighborhood.

Partnering with Free Library of Philadelphia and Metcalfe Architecture & Design, LLC, MJ Settelen Construction delivered a comprehensive renovation that reimagines this 100+ year-old facility as a modern, welcoming, and accessible space for all users.

This renovation transforms the library into a multi-functional environment that supports reading, learning, creativity, and community engagement. The updated design introduces dedicated areas for children and young adults, new study and meeting rooms, and flexible spaces that encourage gathering and collaboration. A new entrance, defined by bold yellow wayfinding and a carved opening in the existing façade, invites visitors into a refreshed interior featuring improved lighting, updated finishes, and enhanced natural light throughout.

Construction Highlights

  • Structural upgrades to reinforce the existing 100+ year-old building while preserving its historic character
  • Installation of new HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems to improve performance, comfort, and energy efficiency
  • Reconfiguration of interior layouts to enhance circulation, visibility, and overall user experience
  • Integration of a new wheelchair lift within the original split-level structure to improve accessibility
  • Masonry restoration and roof repairs to extend the life of the building envelope
  • Coordination and installation of acoustic ceiling systems and vibrant architectural finishes throughout

Community Impact

The renovated Frankford Library now functions as more than a place to access books—it serves as a true “City on a Hill” for the neighborhood—offering after-school programs, literacy support, job resources, and spaces for community gathering. Thoughtful planning and execution have created an environment that is welcoming, flexible, and built to support the needs of the community for years to come.
